How Stainless Steel Watch Cases Are Made: Inside the Manufacturing Process
Share
At Zhongshi Watch Co., Ltd., we believe that every detail matters in watchmaking. Among all the components of a timepiece, the case is one of the most important. It protects the movement, defines the watch’s look and feel, and communicates the quality of the brand. But how exactly are stainless steel watch cases manufactured?
With more than 19 years of experience, our team has perfected the process of crafting cases from 304L, 316L, and 904L stainless steel. Below, we take you behind the scenes of how a raw block of steel is transformed into a polished, premium-quality watch case.
Step 1: Stamping the Blanks
The journey begins with stamping. Large sheets or rods of stainless steel are cut and pressed into rough case shapes, known as blanks. This step ensures consistency and efficiency, providing the base form from which the case will be refined.
After stamping, the blanks are transferred directly to our CNC center, where the detailed manufacturing process continues.
Step 2: Drilling and Structural Shaping
In the CNC center, the blanks are prepared for their final form. Precision holes are created inside the case to accommodate the movement, crown, pushers, and other components.
Accuracy is essential here. Even a fraction of a millimeter can affect water resistance or the stability of the movement. At Zhongshi, our machines are calibrated to extremely fine tolerances, ensuring that every case is structurally sound and ready for the next stages.
Step 3: CNC Machining for Fine Details
With the internal structures prepared, the case undergoes CNC machining. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines carve out the final contours, angles, and design elements of the case. This is where the artistic vision of the brand truly takes shape.
CNC allows us to produce everything from clean minimalist lines to bold complex geometries. Whether it is a classic round case, a multi-layered sports design, or a unique custom shape, CNC ensures repeatable precision on every piece.
Step 4: Deburring and Surface Treatment
Metal edges left from drilling and machining need to be smoothed. This process is called deburring. At Zhongshi, we use both skilled technicians and automated deburring machines to remove sharp edges and refine surfaces, making the case comfortable to wear and safe to handle.
From here, the case moves to surface finishing. Depending on the brand’s specifications, cases may be:
-
Polished for a mirror-like shine
-
Brushed for a matte, satin look
-
Microsandblasted for a fine-textured surface with subtle elegance
-
Combination finished for a dynamic contrast
The finishing step not only determines the aesthetic of the watch but also communicates its level of craftsmanship.
Step 5: Strict Quality Control
Before assembly, every case undergoes rigorous quality checks. Our QC team inspects dimensions, finish quality, and overall integrity. Any piece that does not meet standards is rejected or reworked.
For brands, this is a reassurance that only flawless cases reach the production line. QC at Zhongshi is carried out at every stage, not just at the end, ensuring that problems are caught early and consistency remains high.
Step 6: Water Resistance Testing
The final critical step is water resistance testing. Cases are assembled with the watch crystal and case back in place, then subjected to pressure tests.
This ensures the seals and structure perform correctly, protecting the movement inside. Depending on the design, tests may simulate everyday water exposure (30 to 50 meters) or professional-grade resistance (100 to 300 meters and beyond).
Beyond the Basics: Materials and Innovation
While stainless steel remains the most popular material for watch cases, Zhongshi has expanded its expertise to other materials such as tungsten, ceramic, carbon fiber, K9 glass, and even mossanite inlays. Our continuous R&D means that brands can experiment with unique looks and innovative designs while relying on proven stainless steel foundations.
Why This Matters for Watch Brands
Understanding how stainless steel watch cases are made is more than just technical curiosity. For brands, it means:
-
Confidence in durability, as stainless steel cases are strong, corrosion-resistant, and long-lasting.
-
Consistency in production, since stamping and CNC machining guarantee precision at scale.
-
Flexibility in design, as finishes, shapes, and materials can be tailored to your identity.
-
Quality assurance, with strict QC and water resistance testing ensuring reliability.
At Zhongshi, we do not just produce cases. We help watch brands bring their vision to life with the reliability of 19+ years of manufacturing expertise.
