How to Make a Watch
Share
A Simple Introduction for Beginners
Making a watch is a fascinating process.
Today, you can easily find many DIY watch videos on YouTube, as well as manufacturing videos released by professional watch factories.
In this article, we will explain how a complete watch is made from two perspectives.
Note:
This is a simplified introduction designed for readers who have little or no knowledge about watch manufacturing.
1. How Manufacturers Produce a Watch
Let’s use a stainless steel watch as an example.
Step 1 — Raw Material Processing
The process begins with stainless steel coils.
Using stamping machines and precision molds, manufacturers press the steel into the basic shape of a watch case.
At this stage:
- The case already has the general watch shape
- Edges and internal structures are still unfinished
It is only a rough model.
Step 2 — Watch Case Precision Machining
Next comes structural machining.
Engineers program CNC milling machines according to the watch design specifications, including:
- Movement fitting dimensions
- Crystal thickness tolerance
- Crown tube position
- Internal mounting structures
The CNC process creates all functional structures required for assembly.
Step 3 — Grinding and Polishing
After machining, the case cannot be used immediately.
Why?
Because machining leaves:
- Sharp edges
- Metal burrs
- Surface scratches
Grinding removes rough edges and ensures safety and precision.
Polishing then gives the watch its:
- Metallic shine
- Smooth surface
- Premium appearance
This stage defines much of the watch’s visual quality.
Step 4 — Preparing Watch Components
Before assembly, all components must be ready.
For a mechanical watch, the essential parts include:
- Watch case
- Movement
- Dial
- Hands
- Crown & stem
- Crystal
- Case back
- Gaskets (for water resistance)
- Watch strap
These are the fundamental components required to build a complete watch.
2. Watch Assembly Process (Simplified Order)
Once all parts are prepared, the assembly process begins.
Install the Crystal
- Press the crystal into the case using a crystal press tool.
Check the Movement
- Inspect movement operation
- Set time to 12:00 position (important for hand alignment)
- Secure movement holder
Install the Dial
- Align dial feet with movement holes
- Press gently into position
- Lock using screws or clamps
Install the Hands
Correct order:
- Hour hand
- Minute hand
- Second hand
Key principles:
- Hands must be pressed vertically
- No contact between hands
- All aligned at 12:00
A professional tool called a Hand Press is required.
Case Assembly
- Insert assembled movement + dial + hands into case
- Align crown opening
- Insert crown and stem
Check carefully:
- Time adjustment smoothness
- Hand clearance
Close the Case Back
- Install waterproof gasket
- Close case back by:
- Screw-down
- Press-fit
- Screws
At this point, the watch head is completed.
Install the Strap
- Insert spring bars into lugs
- Attach strap securely using a spring bar tool
Now the watch is fully assembled.
Beyond Assembly
In reality, many additional components also require specialized manufacturing, such as:
- Watch straps
- Case backs
- Dials
- Hands
- Surface treatments
We will introduce these processes in future articles.
